After nearly 30 years of service, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities is retiring the Gopher GOLD declining balance program at the end of the Fall 2026 semester.

Driven by campus feedback and the widespread adoption of mobile and contactless payments, the University is modernizing its card services to better align with current technology trends and reduce operational overhead.

What is changing?

At the start of the Spring 2027 semester, the program will be replaced by U Card Pay. Unlike Gopher GOLD, which required users to pre-load funds, the new account eliminates the hassle of managing a cash balance. Instead, purchases will route to a student’s University billing account (paid with tuition). To ensure a smooth transition, U Card Pay will be limited to campus printing locations and departmental labs at launch.

Your funds are safe

Current balance holders do not need to rush to spend down their accounts. Following the close of the Fall 2026 semester, all remaining Gopher GOLD balances will be fully refunded:

No immediate action is required. You may continue to use your Gopher GOLD funds normally throughout the fall semester. Detailed deadlines, refund timelines and account setup instructions will be shared soon.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Gopher GOLD program ending?

Over the last three decades, payment technology has changed dramatically. With the widespread adoption of personal credit/debit cards and mobile payment options, the day-to-day need for a traditional campus declining balance program has significantly decreased. Retiring the program allows the University to modernize its infrastructure and reduce operational overhead.

When will Gopher GOLD officially shut down?

Gopher GOLD will remain fully functional and accepted across campus throughout the Fall 2026 semester. It will be officially decommissioned at the end of the Fall 2026 semester.

What is U Card Pay?

U Card Pay is the modern replacement for Gopher GOLD, launching at the start of the Spring 2027 semester. Unlike Gopher GOLD, you do not need to pre-load cash onto your card. Instead, eligible purchases are automatically routed to your existing student account.

Where can I use U Card Pay when it launches?

To ensure a smooth transition, the initial launch of U Card Pay in Spring 2027 will be exclusively limited to campus printing locations and academic/departmental labs.

How will I receive my automated refund if I don’t spend it all?

Refunds will be processed after the close of the Fall 2026 semester based on your role:

  • Students: The remaining balance will be applied directly to your student account. It will first cover any pending or outstanding University charges. If there is a remaining credit balance (or no outstanding charges), the funds will be sent to you via direct deposit (if on file) or by check.
  • Faculty and Staff: Your full balance will be refunded directly to you via direct deposit (if on file) or by check.

I have a Guest / Visitor card. What happens to my balance?

Guest and visitor cards will also be decommissioned at the end of Fall 2026. Because these cards are not tied to a central student or employee account, refunds cannot be issued automatically. Complete this form to request a refund of a visitor Gopher GOLD card.
